Business Cards are Useless

Posted by Karen Rubin on Thu, Apr 08, 2010 @ 02:54 PM

Ah spring! It's been a beautiful week here in Boston, in fact it's been the first week where I was able to bike to work every day. You might ask, "Karen, what does this have to do with business cards?" Being the first week where I biked to work, also meant I moved from my winter bag to my summer bag, and thus cleaned out all the junk I had accumulated throughout the winter.

In that junk, was a pretty significant pile of business cards. I get, and give business cards everywhere. HubSpot.tv on Fridays, customer interviews, as well as various Boston networking events - they are more popular than candy on Halloween.

As I took that pile of cards, and added them to the box in my desk with all my other cards, I realized I should just throw them away. I never, absolutely never, go back to my business cards to look up contacts. Business cards have become completely useless.

If I meet someone at an event that I want to keep in touch with, I reach out to them on LinkedIn or Twitter. If there is someone I want to reach out to that I am not connect with, I Google them. I never pull out that box of business cards and go through it trying to find their contact information.

My question to you is, why do people still hand out business cards? Do they still add value to you in your world?

I too have a pile of business cards that I never look through. I'm thinking of using them to make a collage or something. At least for most, the paper quality is good for cutouts.

I would love to kill business cards altogether. But I think people still find value in having something to physically hold onto. I have a stack on my desk that I am currently "processing", meaning that I take the "useless" cards I get and make them useful by getting them into my digital marketing world. Maybe someday when everyone has a smart phone we can eliminate them completely <insert evil laugh here>

I use about 40% of biz cards I collect. If I find them useful, I add them to a special list in my contacts. I follow up with the person within 4 weeks of meeting them if I feel it could be a great contact down the line. But, I am not crazy enough to keep every one.

Mark - I agree, frequently I really like the design of business cards.

Jon-Mikel - I have thought about saying to people that I don't need their business card, but that feels insulting. Maybe I should just ask them if they Bump on the iphone. Start my own revolution.

Jennifer - Wow, I am really impressed with your dedication. I have frequently thought that I should do that, but really never get around to it. Nice job!

I use them as follow-up reminders. After exchanging business cards with someone, I jot down a quick note about what they looked like and what I'm supposed to follow up with them about.

I try not to collect tons in the first place, though.

Remember Mission Impossible? Business cards should come with a built in mechanism that causes them to self destruct in 48 hours. Use 'em or lose 'em. Get into my consciousness and address book or SSSSSSSSBoom! IMHO

They become more important in life after 30, then after 40 and then after 50. One needs to remember the name between meeting the person and getting it into contacts! The challenge grows.

My last name is impossible to spell. I find business cards helpful for people to find me later on Facebook or Twitter because they can spell my name.

I ocasionally will type some one's card into my address book but often they go in the trash.

I do prefer bump for all 10 people who use it..

Karen - my memory is shot, so I like to have a biz card just long enough to load it into my computer somewhere (usually Outlook). Also, I like the fact that I can get free business cards at http://Vistaprint.com (actually total cost is about 5 bucks for shipping).

PS Listen to your TV shows each week in my car - and love them. Keep up the good work. And if you get a chance check out my "Laugh and Save" blog. if I lived in Boston (not Seattle) I would apply for the internship there. I find social media fascinating. I'm soaking it up every second......

Apparently the business cards you're picking up haven't been optimized by this guy!

That guy does have one good point, I would keep his card. However, I would be irritated that it doesn't fit in my pocket.
